Tiago Forte
Updated 2026-04-10
Author, educator, and founder of Forte Labs. He developed the Building a Second Brain method, one of the best-known systems in personal knowledge management.
Context
Forte’s interest in PKM did not begin academically, but out of personal necessity. A chronic illness forced him to reorganize his life, his energy, and his information handling. What started as survival strategy became a decade-long research and product-development path.
His conclusion was that the real problem for modern knowledge workers is often not laziness or lack of talent, but missing infrastructure for dealing with information overload. Forte Labs became the education layer around that thesis through courses, community, and the 2022 book Building a Second Brain.
Core Ideas
- Information overload is structural - overwhelm is often a systems problem, not a moral failing
- The second brain - digital tools can act as extended memory and free the biological brain for higher-value thinking
- CODE framework - Capture, Organize, Distill, Express
- Creative output is the goal - PKM is not an end in itself
- Health and productivity are linked - Forte’s personal background gives the method a grounded origin
Connections
- Building a Second Brain - his central work
- Deep Work - adjacent perspective on concentrated knowledge work
- Cal Newport - related thinker; different emphasis
- Zettelkasten Method - alternative PKM approach
